More Sexual Partners Than Ever: Britain’s Sex Secrets
The newest sexual survey reveals that Britons are having more and more sexual partners than ever. Whilst the issue of ‘how many people you’ve had sex with’ is something that we tend to avoid when starting a new relationship, these worries about seeming promiscuous are failing to deter Britons from having more sexual partners than ever before. Whether this is a sign of our increasing confidence in our sexual wellness or in fact a lack of sexual wellbeing is yet to be determined.
Women who are aged between 16 and 44 reported an average of around 7.7 sexual partners, which is a great increase from the 3.7 average that was reported just 20 years ago, according to the recent survey. Men who were in the same age group reported that they were now sleeping with an average of 11.7 partners each, an increase from the previous claim of 8.6 20 years ago.
If you’re reading this and feeling a little hard done by in the sexual partner department, you can take comfort from the fact that although the numbers of sexual partners may have risen, the actual number of times that people report having sex has fallen, from more than six times per week in the 1990s to less than five today.
There is also a much darker side to the survey, as it revealed that around ten per cent of women say that they have been raped. Chillingly, only 13 percent of those victims said that they had reported the crime to the police.
The Charity Rape Crisis said that they are unsurprised by the findings, as they see large numbers of victims in their support centres who have not reported the crime to the police, and previously knew their attacker. They say it represents a problem with the criminal justice system and with victim blaming.
