It is estimated that about 10 percent of the human population experiences an allergy to mold. Aspergillus
Commonly found on food and in air ducts, Aspergillus can cause substantial respiratory distress if allowed to become well-represented in the home environment. Those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung conditions are more susceptible to falling ill due to exposure to aspergillus. Most people who suffer from sensitivity to mold only experience a moderate reaction to aspergillus, however, that includes watery eyes, a sore throat and an itchy nose.
Cladosporium
Commonly found on living and dead vegetative matter, cladosporium spores are most frequently found in homes where residents cultivate a significant amount of houseplants. It also thrives on surfaces such as the backs of toilets and in fiberglass air ducts. Those with respiratory diseases and conditions such as asthma are particularly susceptible to adverse reactions to this particular mold. A musty odor generally signifies its presence in the indoor home environment.
Stachybotrys Atra
Also known as “black mold,” stachybotrys atra is the most infamous of the various household molds. However, its spores don’t become airborne easily, minimizing potential health hazards involved with its presence in the home. It grows best on surfaces with high cellulose content such as drywall, wood and ceiling tiles as well as areas that have experienced water damage. Symptoms of allergic reactions to stachybotrys atra generally take the form of rashes, rhinitis, and aggravation of existing respiratory conditions. Alternaria
