Renaissance Man: Five Domestic Skills That Every Man Should Know

While most men might consider themselves to be independent, they’re probably lacking certain domestic skills. In order to be considered a true renaissance man around the home, there are 5 domestic skills that every adult male should possess. As trivial as they may seem, they all help to define true independence.

Cooking Outside The Box

Cooking balanced meals keeps a true renaissance man fit and alert. A true knowledge of cooking should never be confused with ordering take-out or using the microwave to heat frozen food. A man should be able to cook for himself, his family, and even the occasion group of friends. If a gentleman is single and has never seen the inside of his stove, it’s time to buy a cookbook or take a local cooking class.

Essential First Aid

This is something every male should be comfortable with. From cleaning a wound to putting on a bandage, knowing first aid is simply common sense. Knowing how to stabilize an injury until emergency help arrives may even prove to save someone’s life.

Laundry

When a man in his thirties brings a bag of dirty cloths to his parent’s home, that doesn’t scream independence or renaissance man. While it’s not particularly necessary to own a washer and dryer, men should posses the skills to use the Laundromat without ruining their clothing.

This certainly isn’t limited the basics of washing and drying. Men should know what items need to be dry cleaned, how to remove common stains, and how to separate colors.

Although this might be considered another category, every renaissance man should also know how to use an iron.

Basic Sewing Skills

Being able to patch a torn pair of jeans or sew on a button are fundamental skills that every man should have. While there is certainly no need to be an expert, being able to execute “repairs on the fly” means not having to throw out perfectly good clothing simply because a button has popped off. If you’re feeling brave, you could sign up for classes from a shop like Sew Pro’s Sewing & Vacuum Centers. These can give you the basic skills you need to manage a few simple repairs, and potentially more.

Cleaning That Passes Inspection

Although there are certainly exceptions, most men are not blessed with the housekeeping gene. Whether a man is single or is in a relationship, they should always make an effort to keep a clean house. This doesn’t mean hiding dirty cloths in the closet. It does mean cleaning the bathroom, vacuuming and mopping floors, dusting, and cleaning windows.

Being a domestic renaissance man isn’t rocket science but it does take considerable effort. When a man can rely on his own skills around the home, he’ll always have more to offer his family and friends.
