The Date Rape Solution: Optical Light Sensors

Most of us will enjoy a night out occasionally. The drinking and dancing scene isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but for most people it’s a chance to unwind, kick back and just enjoy themselves. Unfortunately here as in so many other places in the world, there are hidden dangers. It’s a mark of the times, nobody is safe anymore and that means vigilance in all aspects of our lives even at times when all we want to do is have fun.

The main danger when you’re out and about, especially if you’re a female or a gay man, are date rape drugs. We’ve all heard horror stories of ladies who’ve accepted drinks from strangers and the next thing they know they’re waking up somewhere scared, alone and confused with no idea how they got there or where there actually is. Sadly it’s not as much of a story as many would like to believe and in busy clubs or bars it can be a genuine threat, especially in the larger towns and cities.

Up until now the only defence has been keeping careful watch on your drink and not accepting drink from strangers. However as people get more drunk they tend to become less cautious and the chances of them slipping up increasing their risk factor.

Scientists say they’ve found a solution. A newly developed sensor is supposed to be able to detect the most common date rate drugs with 100% accuracy using light rays to scan a drink very quickly. It’ll go into production soon and those same scientists are improving it even further, trying to expand its potential so it can detect all of the drugs which are currently used to as date rape drugs.
This is great news for everyone, especially those ladies who like to party!
