How can you make your brain healthier and happier?

Getting older is inevitable, and as we get older, so our brains age too. Aging brains can lead to a variety of physical and mental health problems, which is obviously something that most people want to avoid. How can we make our brains healthier, and try to avoid this process?

It’s not possible to totally reverse the effects of aging or fight them off altogether, but there are certain things you can do to potentially help protect yourself against Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions that cause memory loss and other symptoms of deterioration.

It’s something you’ve probably heard before, but there is a lot of truth in the fact that eating a lot of fruit and vegetables is good for you. Research now shows that this doesn’t just count in terms of physical wellness and wellbeing, but in terms of how the brain ages. Healthy food, especially fresh healthy food, helps the body to get rid of toxins. Antioxidants that can be found in fruit and vegetables can actually safeguard you from getting dementia by up to 50 percent, according to scientists.

You could also consider taking a variety of daily vitamin supplements, if you feel that you are not getting the right balance in your diet. Vitamin B is a particularly important one, as there are links between Alzheimer’s and a deficit of Vitamin B. You can get this either through food such as green veggies and beans or by taking a supplement.

Reducing the amount of alcohol you drink can also be beneficial for your brain, as can cutting out smoking altogether (and of course this has great benefits for your physical wellbeing as well). Both of these habits, along with a high intake of coffee and sugar, can actually use up your stores of Vitamin B.

Avoid fast food as the types of fat that is present in junk food can be really bad for your brain. Instead, try to stick to good fats, such as those found in nuts, olive oil, fish, omega-3 fatty acids and so on.

Finally, although it’s impossible to avoid stress altogether, try to minimise stress in your life, as excessive stress can have an impact on how your brain ages.
