What Should You Remember When You Get In a Fitness Slump?
It’s about that time of year when, if you haven’t chucked out the New Year’s Resolutions altogether, you’re hitting a bit of a slump. Whether you joined a gym to improve your overall wellbeing, lose weight or just get a bit fitter,Guildford’s Christina Kostek, Manager at Planet Fitness, and Eric Rapuario, a Premier Certified Trainer at Premier Personal Training, have a few tips for you to follow to smash that slump.
Firstly, make sure that your workout is a planned part of your day, and integrated into your daily routine. If it’s just a part of your ‘to do’ list as going to work or picking up the kids from school, you’re more likely to do it. Also, setting unrealistic goals is damaging to your mental wellness, as well as your eventual outcome. Don’t say you’ll go from no workouts a week to two hours everyday, but set reasonable, achievable goals. However, with both of these tips under your belt it’s still OK to miss a day, or workout for a shorter time. Sometimes, life just gets in the way sometimes of your plans, missing one workout shouldn’t make you pack the whole thing in.
When it comes to the workout itself, don’t forget to do both cardio and weights as weight bearing exercises gives you stronger bones, as they increase your bone density. Also, remember to pace yourself and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Don’t go like the clappers because weight loss and fitness is a process, and there won’t be magic results overnight. Even if you just get to the gym and put in a 20 minute workout you’re going to feel better, never mind if you don’t burn quite as many calories as you may want.
If you don’t already have a gym membership, make sure you choose one that is convenient to get to either from work or home. A long commute can become an easy excuse, and motivation is 90% of the battle. Also, try to get out of your comfort zone with a new class, using a different machine at the gym, or just pushing yourself an extra step further. However, remember that getting in shape should be done in a very natural, healthy way and you should never anything extreme diet or exercise wise.
