Managers Take On The Extra Strain The Recession Wrought

Today is not a good day in terms of the economy. This is an issue which the whole world faces and everyone has felt, it doesn’t matter who you are or how you live. The recession has touched us all and for a large proportion of us it’s one of the first economic downturns of this magnitude we’ve ever seen, and shockingly we’re not the best equipped to manage it. Not that anyone’s managed it particularly well; nobody’s as well off as they were a decade ago.

One group of people that are suffering more than most are managers, those who’re in charge of an office or group of people and are responsible for that. Due to company restructuring and forced redundancies it’s been harder and harder for this group to cope with the additional work load. In one case they may well be working to learn the additional systems for the new structure and in the other they may be forced to take on extra work as they simply don’t have the size of workforce they used to. This leads to overtime for which they never get paid.

All these excess hours amount to somewhere in the region of 46 unpaid days worked a year which is insane. This obviously increases the strain on managers who get stressed and depressed while trying to juggle all of the new demands they’re being forced to deal with. Companies simply cannot afford to employ the same number of people as they once would have.
