Are You Eating The Right Foods For Fertility?

Many men and women struggle to conceive a baby. Infertility is a major health concern and can occur in men or women, for different reasons. There are a variety of treatments available to infertile couples but the good news is that there are also things that they can do to improve their own wellbeing.

A healthy diet is essential for all people, but for those suffering from fertility problems it can be the key to helping them conceive that much-longed-for child.

Vitamin D should form a vital part of that diet, either through foods or through an additional supplement in pill form. This vitamin is so vital because it helps the body to absorb calcium, boosts the work of the immune system and, most importantly of all in this case, helps in the production of sex hormones. It is a fat-soluble vitamin and can easily be absorbed into the body, if the correct diet or supplement is provided.

A deficiency in vitamin D can lead to fertility-related wellness problems, such as PMS, PCOS and, in some cases, infertility.

Cod liver oil is a great source of vitamin D, although it can be hard to take in this form as the taste (and the odour) of this oil can be quite unpleasant. Taking one tablespoon of cod liver oil each day provides you with your full daily vitamin D requirement, although this should be done with care as it can cause an upset stomach.

Soy and soy-related products are also a great source of vitamin D, as are mushrooms, especially when cooked lightly. Oysters are also useful for boosting fertility (and are rumoured to be an aphrodisiac too!) The sea also offers salmon, tuna, catfish, herring and sardines as rich sources of vitamin D. Protein lovers can also look to eggs or salami for a vitamin D boost. A final source of vitamin D is available for free in the sunlight, which is absorbed through the skin.
