Could You Completely Cut Down On Carbohydrates?
A ketogenic diet, or a diet consisting of minimal carbohydrates, is often used as a weight loss tool as it means that your body relies on less than 50 grams of carbohydrates and instead fuels its processes mainly with fat. Eating excessive amounts of carbohydrates can cause severe wellness problems, such as obesity, which further risks your wellbeing to weight-related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
These diseases weren’t such a problem to your ancestors, because they survived without the availability of rice, breads and pasta that are so commonly consumed today. You could argue that they didn’t live very long, but this was more often than not due to accidents, and historical studies show that the removal of accidents as a cause of death would have skyrocketed their life expectancy, thanks to their diet and lifestyle choices, the main point of which was to avoid non-nutritious sources of carbohydrates.
The majority of the weight loss industry say that you should control your calories, but this is based on the assumption that all calories are equal and many dieters fail or regain weight because they don’t care what kind of calories they consume, as long as the numbers add up correctly. Carbohydrates raise your blood sugar levels which releases a lot of insulin into the bloodstream. This interferes with glucagon, which does the same job as insulin (breaking down stored fat for energy) but the two are like day and night; they will not co-exist. Extreme weight gain and obesity is caused by these elevated levels of insulin in your system.
Therefore, look to a diet rich in nuts and seeds, extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, natural and preferably organic peanut and almond butter, fish, eggs, poultry, pork, fibrous veggies, red meat, avocadoes and milk. This diet will get your body fat percentage down to single digits, decrease you serum triglyceride levels and bad cholesterol, increase your good cholesterol and insulin sensitivity, give you consistent energy levels throughout the day and, if all that wasn’t enough, this diet will help you lose weight. See if you could completely cut down your carb intake, and consult a dietician, a doctor or look online for further information.
