A new study suggests that carrying excess weight around your abdomen could increase your risk of developing kidney disease. This tendency is often referred to as being ‘apple shaped’, rather than ‘pear shaped’ which is weight carried around the hips. It has been noted in previous studies that apple shapes are also more at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases as well. The research was carried out by the University Medical Centre Groningen, situated in the Netherlands, who looked at the kidney health of more than 300 people.

Researchers noted that those with a higher waist to hip ratio, such as those categorised as apple-shaped, were more at risk of a lowered kidney function, as well as reduced kidney flow and high blood pressure. This was found to be the case even in those who were otherwise healthy. The results of the study show that individuals with these symptoms could benefit from treatments which will reduce the blood pressure in the kidneys, such as cutting the salt levels in their diet and targeted medications.
