Could your Health Problems be Caused by Being Underweight?

When you think of weight problems, it is inevitable that most people think of struggling to lose weight. But, did you know that there is a significant percentage of people out there who are struggling to gain weight? It may seem, to many people, that gaining weight is a simple matter of eating more food, but, just as losing weight is not a simple matter of ‘eating less food’, gaining weight can be a real challenge for many people, and one for which there is little support.

Gaining weight can be as vital as losing weight, as being underweight can have a significantly damaging effect on your wellness and wellbeing. As well as being responsible for a number of health conditions, being underweight can also affect your self-esteem, as many people feel that being thin is unattractive and long for some ‘curves’. Others may also wish for increased strength, as those who are very thin can have a problem with core stability.

Being underweight can be caused by a number of factors, such as having a very high metabolism, suffering from extremely high levels of stress, digestive problems that affect the proper absorption of nutrients, being hyperactive or taking excessive exercise, depression, wasting diseases, hyperthyroidism, irregular eating patterns and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.

Solutions can be far trickier to find than causes, and can vary widely depending on what the underlying cause to the low weight is. Assuming that you are in good general health, and not suffering from an eating disorder, the main way to increase your weight is through increasing your daily intake of healthy foods. Eating junk food or very fatty food is not advised for weight gain, as it causes the gain of fat, whereas you want to increase your body size in an attractive and balanced way, not by being a thin person with a big tummy! This means having a healthy, balanced diet, eating five meals per day and gradually increasing your portion sizes.
